D305 – The mobile steam-powered fire engine by Wilesco
In 1987, Wilesco released its first mobile steam engine in the form of a fire truck. The model is inspired by the Magirus steam-powered fire engines that were used around the turn of the century in Germany, the UK, and the USA.
This miniature, steam-powered fire truck is a highly detailed replica. It can drive forward and backward, making it great fun for the whole family.
Just like its historical counterpart, the model features a vertical boiler and drive system. A clutch lever activates the self-priming water pump. Beneath the front bench seat is a water tank directly connected to the pump via hose. The benches are made of wood, the boiler and pipes of solid brass.
Real working water spray function
Just like a real fire engine, the D305 can spray water. The pump draws water from the tank under the seat and sprays up to 3 m. The water pressure can be regulated via the steam valve. The tank can also be refilled using the suction function—e.g., with a hose placed in a glass of water and the flywheel spun in the reverse direction.
Did you know...
...that German fire trucks are designed very differently from their US counterparts? They must be versatile for city, forest, and rural use.
...that fire pumps were invented in Ancient Rome? Emperor Augustus organized the first public fire brigades.
...that early fire vehicles were horse-drawn wagons? Motorized fire engines were developed during the industrial era—but initially feared for use near flames.
...that Magirus remains a major fire engine manufacturer today and is now part of Iveco?
